Two Frame Films
I was not here for the experiment but seeing the video there are a lot of chance based diptychs and some of them relate to each other a lot and in the first game it did not look like it went well with both packs running at different speeds and you don't get to look at a lot of the diptychs but the ones you do get to see are ones that look good. With the second game it was more organised and you got to look at all of the diptychs that do appear and again there are some that relate too well. In the third music was added but not just one song at a time multiple songs at the same time and with the diptychs adds a sort of confusion as you are getting pulled by looking at the diptychs and listening to the music it splits your focus. The tools that were used to create the game were a camera and a copy stand to hold the camera in the same position at the height needed so we can see the hands and the photos but nothing else in the frame, so all we can focus on is the diptychs and throwing the dice into frame makes it easier to understand what is happening and allows you to completely focus on the diptychs. Following the progression of changes from the first to the second where they allowed the stacks to move at the same time which made it flow more nicely and structured. For the second to the third game the rules were the same but music was added which added more to the video but was a distraction. The reason we did this game was to see how chance can bring out better results than a deliberate diptych as when you start looking at photos long enough you might never make one and sometimes the connections might be too obvious. So sometimes in order to make something a random pairing and sometimes it might be better than you think.
Initial Diptychs
These are some initial and chance diptychs from found photos and these are all random diptychs.
The process in which I randomised them is similar to how you shuffle cards. I just put them on a table then just randomly moved them around put them back into a stack and then split the stack multiple times to get the following results
This is my favourite random diptych from this set as the connections that they have flow nicely together with the the oxford is vertical which is the same as the pole and that both have been there for a long time as they are both dirty. There is also the fact that there is a major difference between them and it is that one has writing and the other doesn’t and that difference is the thing that makes it fit well together.
Photos used to make diptychs
These are photos I took around my area of residence.
deliberate diptychs
Some of these diptychs are plain to see as while others do require more thought
This is my favourite deliberate diptych reason being that it there is a sort of anomaly in both with the crack of grass and the other having a tile missing but it leaves a very fat crack between them which is why I like this one the best comparing the different cracks and even within the slim crack there is another anomaly with the red grass and with the other having the slit between the two bricks.
Random Diptychs
The process in which these came to be was I had the list of the imported photos on my computer and I used a random number generator and got these.
This is my favourite random diptych mainly due to the framing of both as they have green o the left and something dead next to it, it haas the difference where one has more colour due to the roses while the other is more dull but they do fit nicely together.
John MacLean prompt diptychs
We were given a list on the prompts in which John MacLean took his diptychs

This video shows the evolution of film and the way it was done with the purposefulness of propaganda being used to help people join your cause and it shows all the different methods in which it can be done and this relates to photography as it allows the same idea of editing and staging to entice the same effect that it has. This idea has allowed different styles of photography to begin and expand to make the photography we see today.

Luke Fowler
Two Frame Films
Two-Frame films this title for me who has watched a lot of tv shows and movies represents two individual frames that would be right next to each other and in term that is what a diptych is two different frames next to each other. The opening text that is read is of someone with two lenses and another with one and it is obvious that they represent a camera and eyes and with the text next to each other it creates a paradox between them and paradoxes can never be solved and I think that is a big thing about photography is that it can't be solved. He made these photographs with a camera that takes half frame photos and used those to create the book. A diptych is where two photos have been put next to each-other to create an effect and the half frame photographs are a diptych as he pressed the shutter twice to create two images that are present on the same piece of film which created the diptychs. Even though most of the diptychs were created by chance they each had their similarities and differences each which made them even more unique as they were random but relate as well. Luke could control what the two photos were if they were taken in a relatively close span of time but seeing as some where in completely different locations he could control it otherwise it was by chance. When it comes to my images I don't really care about the control of what I am taking the photos of just that I can frame and focus the way I want.

Mirrors and Windows
This subject is the interpretation of mirrors and windows in photography and plain and simply, windows are describing something and mirrors are describing or reflecting you. The first thing we did was do a blind movie drawing which is basically drawing the movement of your eyes and we did it of rear window by Alfred Hitchcock. We did it due to the movement of the camera and it going outside and then back to the apartment
After this we looked at the an actual exhibition called mirrors and windows and we had a stack of photos from it which we had to put in a line from the most window to the most mirror
This is what we decided to do with the photos given and you can see the. obvious reasons as to why we put the ones at the end as we did. There are more deeper explanations for windows and mirrors in photography as they represent ideas around the premise of photography in general as if you did not think about this premise then a lot of photographs would not have been interpreted in the way it has creating photography of today. When it comes to the most mirror like photos it was the lady blowing the bubblegum as getting the bubblegum that big requires time and taking a photo at that time is sort of like and achievement for the photographer and the person as it holds the record that they have done it. For the most window like photo it is the three ladies walking down the street as I have assumed that the photographer doesn't know them and taking the photo was sort of like a chance photo that ended up coming out good.
MirrorsThese are my mirror images and the reason for me why they are mirror images is because it is my space what is in it and what I do in it with all the things I have, with the little fidget things and then things I play on, to my daily uses
|
WindowsThese are my window images as the reason for that is because these are just things I saw on my way home and took a photo on my phone there was no purposefulness in the composition or focus just and object on my way home form school.
|
Window Set
With this final set I have decided to focus on window like images as that is what I enjoy taking more of and the images here are just clear representations of garden stuff which in turn can turn it mirror like on the person who decorated the garden but for me as I have not done that this is pure window. You could draw some hypothetical mirror like conclusions from the images portrayed.
Jiro Takamatsu
Photograph of Photograph
This project was of takamastu commissioning a photographer to photograph photos from his family album and if I were to put them in a genre it would be difficult as the photo in the photo are similar to landscape and family but the whole photo is a still life and the layering of genres on the photos makes this simple idea a bit more complex. All the images also have multiple things in common were it comes to the angle of the photos in the photo where they are never straight on the camera which could show that they are actually separate from the photographer and subject but could also be to get the glare/reflection which also they all have in common and that might be the case to make sure we don't focus too much on the photo inside but the whole photo creating a distance, another common factor is the fact that there is a lot of space around the photos which could hold some interpretations. In some of the photos we can also see the hand of someone holding the photos and from what we can see it is a female so it could be the person who took the photo or have a connection to the family. With the space around the photos we see multiple locations walls and floors and tables we start to see the making of a house and that could have some connection to the family. Literally there is a mirror in the photos because of the glare but metaphorically there is a reflection in the type of images chosen of the different places and the memories they might have. Even though the photos were taken by a professional photographer kit does not change the fact that they are takamatsu's memories and family photos and it allows the photographer to investigate memory as a whole.

These photos of photos is something very similar to Jiros work but I wen with a more up close version of it and I used my flash to make the focusing clearer and it allowed for some nice effects on some of them with it sometime moving into focus sometimes out sometimes it just made it look more realistic even though some of them are drawings it still makes it feel like an actual place and even with the flowers it creates an odd perspective with focus and angle of it which has made it more abnormal from the normal pictures.
Robert Parkinson
Rear Window
If I were putting his images in the window and mirrors scale I would put it in the middle as it shows window like characteristics with it shows objects and things clearly but it is also like a mirror as it is his window and he is choosing specifically what e is taking a photo of from the view through the window. It was very advantageous with the covid 19 lockdown as that allowed him to focus and wait for the opportunities that might come along and take photos of it. Also with the photos being taken in a time where everyone was in their home it is easily understood as during the lockdown most people might have done similar things of just looking out a one point and seeing everything around it and fully looking at the area where you live. For me if I were to put my own images in the scale they would be more heavily put towards the window side as my favourite part of taking photos is looking at the things in this world and trying to put a new perspective on it with new twist being added to it through editing software allows images that would usually look dull more bold. There are times when my photos show mirror like characteristics when it comes to photos where I am deliberately setting the scene for the photo but those times are very rare. When it comes to all photographs being both mirror and window is not something I completely believe in as there are a lot of photos that are completely window and others that are completely mirror and they are easily identifiable but there are photos that are both and those phots are usually more abstract as it allows the possibility to both to exist in the same photo. When I am looking at photos I mostly like photos that show vibrant colours and scenery, so most of the time it is landscapes but there is also graffiti as that has the same effect but ta different process as one is natural landscape and the other is manmade art but both use colours in a vibrant and bold way that make me look at it for a long time.

This photoshoot I took in school as I had time and the idea of having a window to the subject through the camera on my phone and due to the camera you can see more of the subject even though it is out of focus and the smaller part of the whole subject that can be seen is in focus and creates a double effect through the window. This idea I would do again as it has many different applications on many different types of subjects and is quite fun to do.
This is my response to Robert Parkinson with me taking the photos through my window at night instead of the day as it limits the objects that can be seen and allows what natural light there is to bolden what objects can be seen.

Incidents
Analyse
Incidents if I had to say what the book is about the title does semi explain it with that there are actual incidents in there as the word incident implies some sort of bad accident or something bad in general but it also just involves regular things like crossing the street or waiting for the bus, these things are relatively normal things which are just situations which is what I get more from the book that each photos portrays a situation whether it be a good situation or bad situation is unknown we just have a photo and make assumptions from it. This book is that of situations that happen in a city. The cover has a lot of negative space and the image is relatively small and has a bigger version in the book although the photo and the title name are in the just a little higher than the center the more interesting part is that the cover is made from some fabric not the traditional hard cover or paper which has a nice feel to it, the image is tipped in on the fabric rather than printed but the title is stitched on it seems. With the photo already being in the book I think it is just there for show not for any actual use I think the cover material is what makes the book stand out and gives it a big impact. The actual photos themselves are interesting, first they are all black and white and are taken in public places either from roads, front gardens, pools and malls places that people are seen doing stuff creating incidents/situations. These photos were all unpublished and each have their own incidents/situations around them which is why they were put together as they were taken at different times and each have a incident/situation showing that every photo has a incident/situation. By the selves the photos have no artistic vision but together there is the clear vision that in every photo there is a incident/situation and not really anything else that I can see. With how all the photos are candid and they are all landscape with the fact he is taking photos of the general population his technique is best for the subject. Also with the photos some seem aesthetically sophisticated while others feel amateurish with how there are a lot of obstructions while others clearly show what is intended. The page layout is rather basic as most of them are just one photo one page and I think he has done this to make every reader focus on the main point of the book which incidents. So I think he chose purposefully the placement of each photo. The only text in this book is the title and all the images relate to that text in some way. If anything bad about the layout it is that it is overly used. The photos that are in it are very unique as I think he was trying to have each photo show a different incident and no repetitions to show a diversity and make use of each page. the order of the photos make it seems like he has just gone around the city taking photos of different incidents. This book doesn't really have a narrative as it really just shows a journey through the city with no specific purpose other than incidents. The idea of the book has stuck with me after viewing it but a lot of the images are not that memorable. The reason why the idea stuck with me is because it is unique thing to take photos of and I haven't seen any other books like it.

Psychogeography, the Situationist international and the dérive
It can be used as an art term which describes the effect of a geographical location on the emotions and behaviour of individuals.
website link to psychogeography
The Situationist International was an international organisation of social revolutionaries made up of avant-garde artists, intellectuals, and political theorists.
website to the situationist international
A technique of rapid passage through varied ambiences.
website to the theory of dérive (a bit wordy)
In summary
All of these therms are linked to one thing in general which is freedom wether from capitalists or to move according to emotions and the dérive is a technique that can accomplish that. As all you do when using dérive is drift moving place to place because of the ambiance or something like that you can get the weirdest pictures from things you might not normally take photos of.

Derive photoshoot
Doing a derive was very peaceful to just walk with no destination not worrying about how long it takes to get somewhere, just to walk while taking photos now and then. Some of these are very interesting with the motion blur and I took them with my phone camera as that just felt the easiest to use so I did not have to mess with camera settings I could just take photos. Even though doing a derive felt good to do, it is not something I would do often as that peaceful feeling wouldn't feel peaceful if I did it all the time, it would become a more of a bother and the whole free feeling will disappear. This also is not a useful technique to take photos for a specific purpose so using this to take photos for my photo book would not be useful but gathering ideas to use for a specific purpose on a photoshoot later on is something a derive can do. When takin these photos I never stopped moving which is different from normal photographers as they stop to take the photo I also never looked at my phone screen when taking the photos just trusting my instinct to see the same things my eyes saw. I did do things photographers would never normally do and if I took and idea to try further on specific photoshoots would be to keep moving and not stop to not look in the viewfinder to compose the photo and the motion blur that are in some of the photos.
Edited Flower Photos
I wanted to see what I could do to the flower photos on photoshop and these are the results of the first 6 photos. I used the auto function on brightness and level and then manually did the curves and colour balance functions all the others I picked and chose from the rest to get the multiple edits. I do want to do more of the flower photos maybe all of them but with the photo book of nature art vs man made art editing nature art with a program turns it into a hybrid of both which is something I want to try more of.
2nd Derive
With this derive I decided to focus on the speed in which I was walking and what I was taking photos of and I kind of waked at a fast pace to get the motion blur of my movement and I also decided to take photos of the floor as that is were the motion blur would be most effective and there is a lot of the time something interesting on the floor. When you look at the photos individually they don't look like much but if you look at them in a grid you can sort of see the pace I was walking at. Instead of doing another derive I would like to see if I can edit them in some way and combine them to create a just one compilation image of them together.
Book Binding Techniques
There are a lot of different binding methods for books some more common than others. When looking at the different methods there are only 3 techniques that I would do.
Saddle stitch binding
Singer sewn binding
wire o binding
Saddle stitch binding
Singer sewn binding
wire o binding
Saddle stitch binding is very simple method and most suited for smaller books where you fold the paper in half and staple it which makes it very cost effective and still durable like other methods, it also opens flat which makes it easier to document and saddle stitch allows for many variations. Although it is limited in the number of pages that it can do along with no superior appearance makes it less appealing than other methods as their unusual binding give it and edge. You also have to worry about page creep when the margin of the photo when folded. Now with this method I could send it off to be printed professionally in this method which will make the book look the best it can with this method but I could do it myself and the quality of the binding would diminish significantly so if I want to do this method I would need to choose if I want professional or myself.
link to make the book yourself click here |
Singer sewn binding is a traditional and whimsical method where a single thread is used and stitched through at the spine and this methods is mostly used on books with one section. This is very similar to saddle stitch in being sturdy and durable and opens flat so has the same benefits but what it has that saddle stitch does not is its appearance with the singer sewn method giving it an edge in the effort it seems to be put into it, also it is not bound by the limited page number so you have the chance to make a bigger book. But it is not as cost effective and fast as saddle stitch which means if you want to change something or add something in the book you will have to go through the whole process again. An annoyance is that if you have a photo spread on two pages some of it might get lost so you can't really do a that and either only have one on one page or multiple on one page. With this method it has to be done professionally as it requires technology I don't know how to handle.
|
Wire O binding is usually used for school work and documents so I think using it for a photo book is not the common which will make it different from all the other book very similar to singer sewn and saddle stitch in terms of advantages sturdy durable and opens flat but the pages can be turned over completely whereas the other two when turned will bend the pages and can change the perspective of the photo but with this that won't happen which helps and the if you let go the the book it won't fling close it will stay there so you can look at it more, a large page count is also possible if wanted. Although photos that go over the spine is impossible as there is a gap which none of the others have it will single the pages out there is also a smaller area that you can deal with as the punctured holes take space. With doing this the easiest way I thought would be to buy a blank version and stick on the photos which give me a lot more control as when you bind printed photos you have no control to change anything if you want to.

2nd Derive Edit
This is a compilation of the photos of the 2nd derive with that I thresholded them and created them together an interesting and with the edit you can see images that look similar but are different photos and you can flow through the photos in many different and can start from any photo and look from there.

Night Flash Flower photography
Doing photography at night was very fun and interesting as you can't see everything clearly and doing this it is limited and so you can only take photos of what stands out. If I was to do this again I would take my time more as the some of the photos are out of focus when I would like it to be. But the satisfaction of taking these photos from barley seeing anything to this feels good. I would also choose a location with more variety of flowers.
Henri Prestes
His night photography is similar to other photographers night photography but he involves more mystery with fog and ambient light while still maintaining a clear focus It is something the looks simple but is hard to do as you would need a low aperture and long shutter speed so the slightest movement could destroy the whole photo and have to be redone, so it is a very technical thing to do with the patience needed to get the right focus along with everything else. He does use a lot of natural moonlight so in London that would be difficult to do as the whole city is filled with street lamps so I would have to use those as my light source instead of the moonlight.
New Night Photos
This is my first take of night photography where I mostly meddled with the camera settings to see what worked and the main settings I used was a aperture of 4.6 or 5.6, a shutter speed of 0.5 seconds to 4 seconds and and iso of 100 these are what I put all these photos around and I had a tripod to set up my camera and one or two is a bit out of focus as I think it happened when I pressed the shutter and nudged it slightly which is something i will have to be careful of when doing it again and I will chose a location with fewer street lamps so it is not as bright so I could extend the shutter speed and potentially get a better ambiance.
Edited
I was just messing around in photoshop with my night photos and ended up clicking the inverted option and found that it made the photos quite abstract and gives it a new perspective and to enhance them I clicked on the vibrance option and maxed it out.
Night Flower Photos edited
These are edited photos with only the manipulation of the curve function on photoshop and just that function can create a multitude of things I like as they were originally night flash photography they were already had a darker background but this turned all the branches and leaves that were there gone and gave the flowers an ambient glow when it is extremely low but I also wanted the sharpness from the focus on the flowers which is why there are 2 edited photos for each.
Graffiti Photos edited
These photos are ones I have taken a while ago but went back to as I have been editing a lot of photos recently so I picked some out snd used the same functions that I have always done and messed around with them until I got something I liked.
Sky Garden edited
This is originally another set that I took a while ago and decided to edit and with the monochromic series of green it is a colour i don't usually work with in photoshop so it was fun figuring out what worked on green and what did not.
Cityscape Photos
These are photos that are taken around the shard in London and is the last photo shoot for my photobook.
They are mostly centred around the architecture of the city, finding the different angles and perspectives that can come from positioning yourself in the space available. With being able to find multitude of compositions that can come from one or multiple buildings.

Photobook
Nature VS Man Made
The main premise for my photobook is nature vs man made but when exploring the nature aspect I found that when I edited them they themselves became a man made thing as man made objects are mostly built from inspiration from nature and as I have edited a photo of nature from a man made program it became a sort of hybrid which is what I have decided to call the edited photo. With the photobook I have decided to split the sections into 3, first section is nature section, the second section being hybrids and the third section being man made. the nature section will only have unedited flower and nature photos while the man made will have edited versions of them as it will only make it more man made as the hybrids are nature that have been edited with man made functions which is why they ave there own section.
First section of Photobook
Natural
This section will only encounter non edited flower photos.
This is a base line to what the first section could look like obviously the blank pages are where there are going to be spaces maybe some writing the first blank space at the beginning is the other side of the cover. One thing I should also make clear is that the book I am going to be using is a wire o binging so there is a larger space where images can't go due to the holes made for the binding and the images that are supposed to be on the left pages due to a page turn will just be mirrored so it fits. The way I would get them to the sizes I want when I print them to stick on I will just print these out at the a4 landscape size them cut them out and straight to stick. With the transition to the hybrid section I will either have one blank or double blank to signify it or have a bit of writing to clarify.
The left side images have been flipped to account for the wire o binding.
So this is what it will most likely look like.
So this is what it will most likely look like.
Second Section of Photobook
Hybrid
This is a section I originally was not planning of existing as I did not think of it at the start of the process but as I was editing the nature photos to add something to the nature section i realised that these are no longer nature but hybrids of nature and man made as I used a man made program of photoshop and edited a nature photo which is how this section came into being. There will be no edited photos of man made as they are already photos of man made things so editing them just makes it more man made so the edited photos will be on the man made section so the third section will most likely be longer due to that but might not as I have not taken as many man made photos.
This is the baseline for this section to look like and the same thing applies all on the left will be mirrored to accommodate the binding space.
left flipped, what it will most likely look like.
Third Section of Photobook
Man-Made
This section will encounter both non edited and edited man-made photos
Baseline of what it could look like the left side images still need to be flipped.
left flipped, what will most likely look like.
Mini mock book
This mini mock book is just the first section printed on paper to see what the flow is like and if the colours still work well and it is not vibrant like semi gloss or full gloss photo paper but the colours still stick so when i do actually print on photo paper that will make colours vibrant and pop it will work very well.
The process of making the book
When doing all the layouts I made the pages the size of an a4 landscape and so I will but a a4 landscape wire o binding book with more than 26 pages as that is the minimum safety I can count for the Pages I will have so in likely hood I will but a 50 page book and then print, cut and stick until completion and the rest of the pages I will just rip out as with wire o binding ripping out pages will not cause any harm to the binding and other pages and the reason I want to print, cut and stick is as I have more control than just sending it off to be printed professionally.
I will also be printing on what some call pearl or laissez-faire or semi glossy but it will allow the colours to still be vibrant but without to much shine that makes them hard to look at although it is the more expensive than other different types of photo paper it should be worth it.
I will also be printing on what some call pearl or laissez-faire or semi glossy but it will allow the colours to still be vibrant but without to much shine that makes them hard to look at although it is the more expensive than other different types of photo paper it should be worth it.
Printing
The printing process was tedious as first I had to set up my computer and connect it to the printer which took about 1 hour and 15 minutes and I started at 5 in the afternoon and then after that I had to print each section on semigloss photo which takes longer in the printer and had to do it one by one instead of sending multiple at a time as my computer can't do that and then there was the changing the inks so I could keep printing so dealing with that took 2 hours and 45 minutes so in total about 4 hours of printing.
Cutting and Sticking
As I have printed out the page layouts so all the photos are the size I want I just have to cut and stick them which I can see from my website what it is supposed to look like when sticking it in so I can get it pretty accurate and the only tedious part is with the glue as you need to make sure it sticks.
Title
Triality
I first thought of this word being separate with tri for triple and ality for reality but when I searched this word it came out to be and actual word with the meaning " the state of being threefold " and for my book it is fittingly perfect with it having three sections that can be closely connected even overlap. and there are topics about how when you take a photo of a natural object that act turns it into man made and it is true if you think of it in digital/computer or 2d space but in the idea of actual atom or 3d space it remains as natural, and there are other topics that surround this idea of reality and the reader can think of it being in any reality but when seen that there are 3 sections that are different but closely related they should see something similar to what I see and is a hidden premise with trying to change peoples perception of what they think reality is to mine and this was not a conscious decision it might of been a part of why I have decided to do a book like this.
This is a flip through of the book.
