My Summer
With my summer i disconnected from the real world and basically did not go outside and spent most of my time binge watching tv shows. So in terms of taking photos there is not a substantial amount and it is mostly the same thing I like to take photos of flowers. while binge watching different shows even though they are all fictional they showed a different part of the world and what can bee seen as the truth.
These photos are just something I had the opportunity of taking when I went to a birthday party and just took photos of things that caught my eye. Some of the close ups worked out very well catching both the colour and texture of the flowers very well, while the flowers that are very small did not get the best focus. The photos at the end of the wasp I took because it was there.
Also thinking about what I watched over the summer and what it showed me I have become interested on what is not seen in the perceived world and focus on trying to find the hidden world. the parts of the world that you know exist but don't pay attention to or parts of the world very few know of. So I want the main part of my project to be about the hidden world and have the idea of truth around the photo and if it shows the truth in-bedded into the project.
First Thought
When I was thinking about the hidden world one thing that came to mind was the sewage system and it is a part of the world that everyone knows about but pays no attention to.
I found something similar to this thought with a book called gutter things in which it is full of photos of things left in the gutter at the side of the road. It is similar as when I first thought about what photos to take I was thing of doing close ups of manhole in the gutter as I would be able to at least get a peak at that hidden world. What also struck me was that the framing and composition of the photos are all nearly identical and it is ordered in a way that the side of the pavement is in the centre of the book to that the two pictures will create something akin to a wall that blocks the two objects.

Second Thought
As I just disconnected from the world over the summer, I just binged watched tv. I stayed in my room for the most part of the holiday. I could do something in my room like take a photo in a similar position at the same time every day or take photos around the house at different angles. As when I stayed in I imposed restrictions on my self of staying inside. It does also play in to a hidden world as no one knows what my world is like apart from me and my family so taking photos around this will open the world that I live in.
San Quentin Project
Nigel Poor
This project is a cooperation between photographers and inmates to get their perceptive of photos and also the photographed history of the prison and it is divided into three parts. The 1st part is where they were given photos from the outside world and they wrote down their thoughts about it. The 2nd part is similar but the photos are the history of the prison and wrote their thoughts. The 3rd part is all about the history of the prison and doesn't involve the inmates and all the photo were digitised and put into different categories. It is eye opening at first as the preconceptions of inmates really change to the fact that they are just human as in society inmates are ostracised and made to look dangerous which also comes from tv shows and movies and from the 3rd part you get to see the society built within making a small world with its own rules.
These photos from part 1 was a sort of introduction with the images on the left being their thoughts and the images on the right being a response or narrative they have made around the photo and you can see, read and inference who they are and their experiences. You get to see their perception on the world from a world that has some many stereotypes and misconceptions.
Part 2 instead of photos of the outside world it is photos from within the prison so they can bring their personal experience in to the thoughts they instead of just speculation. It was just one side though they did not have to write a formal response so they could truly focus on what the image is to them.
Part 3 with it being completely separate from part 1 and 2 you have to make your own interpretations of what is happening and puts you in a similar place to the inmates where you have to use your own experience to draw conclusions to these photos.

Automatic Writing/ Questions
What is it within your photography that you are really interested in?
In my photography I am mostly interested in finding the different angles that I can find and how they look with the subject I am taking it of and its way of finding a different perception of the subject and changing its aesthetic.
What is it about your project that you want to know?
I am mainly wanting to know about peoples perception on the world and why they don't see things that are ignored on a frequent basis and the small worlds within the world that are looked over.
What is it that you want to document?
I want to document my perception of my world, the world that I see in my home on the streets, What my eyes see and my brain processes. Also potentially worlds that most people know of but pay no attention to.
How much do you want to document what you see?
I will document most of what I think if I am able to put what I think into readable words and take photos of my thinking for visual help.
What do you want to share with the viewer?
I want the viewer to see my perception of the world that they see. Also the small worlds that I can get access to.
What do you want the viewer to experience?
I want them to experience a different view on a world that they see everyday and think about their perception on the world and see worlds that they have overlooked and ignored as it does not affect them.
What kinds of emotion/experience do you want the viewer to have?
Preferably something akin shock or a revelations feeling of seeing the worlds that they don't see.
Have you documented in great detail a photographer or groups of photographers that have also photographed similar theme/story/subject?
Nigel Poor the San Quentin project of a prison and the inmates and its history.
What were your findings within their work?
That the stereotypes form prison aren’t completely false but also not completely true as from the photos and how Nigel did the project with the help of the inmates makes it seem that it is somewhat wholesome with that people were sent to prion for a crime and still help other people, that might be thanks to rehabilitation or it just might be them but it is a part of the world that most people ignore as they won't have to go anywhere near a prison in their lifetime so it is a world within a world that only people involved in it will see.

Third Thought
Inspired by my second and the san Quentin project with that they are their own hidden worlds is the abandoned tube stations in London and Chislehurst caves, they are both similar to the sewer thought but this time I can actually get into them with London transport museum being able to explore and Chislehurst being a place that is known for being explored.
Photos for Second Thought
I have taken photos before in my room but I did not go into the depth I did with finding the different angles and some of them turned out beautifully, while others did not focus fight even with trial and error I just went with the one that seemed most in focus.
I did edit some of them to see if it creates more mystery and shows something hidden.
I did edit some of them to see if it creates more mystery and shows something hidden.
I did not edit all the photos as some will not benefit from any editing and the ones I did have benefited in the terms that it has become brighter and more colourful and has allowed more of the premise of hidden world to take affect with you can tell what most of them are but has granted a different perspective on the world around it and shown some of its world.
When I do this again for me to take more photos I will not do flash photography if necessary and I will go into the other rooms in my house that I did not go into due to not being able to do flash photography and also go back over the rooms I have already done to see if I missed anything and most likely have as the rooms were dark to do flash photography and finding more angles will be easier with more light so no flash photography.
I am also thinking of doing something like this but in other places like a relatives home or just see what angles and perspectives I can make with a single object for instance I will have my phone in all the photos taken or my pencil case, a random object and see what I can come up with.
Experiment
I was just playing around on photoshop and I zoomed in a lot and saw the pixels and I thought that this is a hidden world with everyone use the digital world and knows about it but overlook that it is created with pixels. These are screenshots of the edited photos zoomed in. You can see the colour of each individual pixel and if you look at the original photo in comparison and find where I zoomed in you can see where the colours blend in each pixel to create the image.
More Experimentation
When I found and took the pixelated images I wanted to incorporate them together to see what images will come out some have worked well while others did not but I want to mix them together and see if I can make something akin to a collage
These are collages that I might do more of. These do kind of work but instead of overlapping them I might try to keep it plain and simple. In relation to hidden world as the images are from two different perspective with the original being from reality and taking them personally to reveal the hidden world in my home and the other being from the digital reality that was made from photoshop and combining the two worlds creates a new sort of hidden world with the merger of two.
These collages are going on more of the linear and geometric, with everything lining up together and fitting almost perfectly.
Wright Morris
He is a photographer in the 1900s and a lot of the photos I have seen are very easily identifiable but there is one photo out of them that requires a lot of detective work to identify and it is that he has hidden this one photo in his world of other photos that drew me in, With that photo requiring some research to understand its meaning and in relation to the easily identifiable ones it is a different style hiding a hidden piece among what is easy like most of the world being easy to identify but there are times when that is not so easy.
Maria Ahmed
Maria Ahmeds work is similar to what I am doing with the collages I am doing but her collages are very unconventional with them not really taking a geometrical shape as with my collages you can clearly see where one photo ends but with Marias they are like liquid you can see the merger of images and it flows so well, you can look at one of these images for a long time and still not know the amount of individual photos there are but with mine you can.

Exhibition Idea
I thought that as my concept is hidden world why not literally make a world with all the photos from the edited and pixelated photos and I will be trying different styles on photoshop on making this kind of work.
I am thinking of making a video with this image with having it spin to create a more worldly effect of making a world and the world spins.

|
|
The left video is a slow spin and the one on the right is a faster speed. They both do create an illusional effect of a circle and that is what I wanted.
This is another version I created and I will be doing similar things with it.
I taught myself how to create the still image on photoshop and the editing on premiere pro.

|
|
I am going to join the two different worlds into one video.
|
This process took time as I had to cut out each individual frame and plan where I wanted the two worlds to move. I also had to work out how many pixels it had to move in each frame so the speed of it when played was smooth.
|
The video itself is not that illusional but more calming so I did not get the effect I was aiming for but it worked well in adding to the idea of hidden world were as in this video there are two hidden worlds and it sort of shows how hidden worlds could overlap, break apart or repel each other.
If I were to do this again I would make sure that the images won't jump when it loops so it is more free flowing than it is now.

Further Development
To develop this further I am planning on projecting the video onto a wall and have printed images of what make up the worlds blu tac onto the wall overlaying it and then proceeding to take photos of.
These will be the photos that I will put on the wall.
Projection
These are the photos I took when I did the projection and taking the photos were easy but the outcome was not that great there are photos that are good but a lot have ended up with motion blur due to the video or just out of focus. But there are photos that have turned out reasonably well and I will try and develop them further with editing. If I were to do it again I would move the print out images to different locations and group them in different ways to see if I could get different results.
|
This is a video of the projection with the print out photos so as to look at the whole thing.
|
This is a compilation I made with the images I liked out of the photoshoot.
These are edited photos from the photoshoot and when editing I realised that when I took a photo I sometimes got 2 frames of the video as the shutter speed was slow enough to allow the light from both frames to be photographed. I have edited the photos so the colours and photos stand out more so even if the projection is not over a photo you can still see the photo and how that connects to the negative space around the projection and the images that are on the projection will have a unique relationship that can be seen where it either blends in to the world or creates a new image of sorts and just does not mix at all. This edit also allows for the illusionary theme that got added along with hidden worlds as the vibrant colours and the multiple frame photos gives it the illusionary/hallucination that the original video lost.
Video Experiment
This video experiment incorporates full images from my flower photography over the summer break 2022 and the images used to make the worlds. I thought it was something that could work as a showing of contrast of the hidden worlds I mainly take photos, I is not something I am going to experiment further on though as when watched it has too many focal points to focus on throughout the video not allowing you to actually take in each photograph along with the video.
Another Video Experiment
This video experiment os using all of the still photos I took during the projection and having each still photo take one frame and the outcome of the video is different form the previous videos I have made with this being faster than the previous videos while also being "blocky" with it not being smooth like the previous videos. It stands out and it also shows a new perspective of the hidden worlds created with the switching between close up and far away as well as the different angles from close up and far away, you can also see how the video was photographed when watching the video.
Combined
I combined the original projection video with the speedshow video and the combination works very well with you getting a more illusionistic feel from the projection as a whole which was my original aim for the hidden worlds.
